TechFlow reports that Aztec Labs, the developer of Aztec—a privacy and scaling solution based on ZK Rollup—has selected Fernet as its sequencer design.
Fernet's core design feature is permissionless random leader election, enabling anyone to participate in building and operating the Aztec network.
Previously, Aztec Labs evaluated two proposals: B52 and Fernet. B52 proposed using a highest-bid auction mechanism to internalize MEV, maximizing network value while addressing centralization risks arising from proposer-builder separation. In contrast, Fernet relies on verifiable random functions (VRF) to assign each sequencer a randomly generated secret score for ranking, with the highest-ranking VRF output earning the right to produce the next rollup.
