TechFlow reported on August 27 that two engineers from the crypto quant firm Kronos Research tampered with code in the simulated trading environment and predictive analytics system because they were dissatisfied over not receiving bonuses. This manipulation prevented the company's investment decisions in cryptocurrencies from achieving optimal portfolio outcomes, resulting in a loss of $1.4 million.
The Taipei District Court sentenced the Chen engineer to eight months in prison, with an option to pay a fine in lieu of serving time; the Hsu engineer received a 10-month sentence, also with the option to pay a fine instead of incarceration (Note: "paying a fine in lieu of imprisonment," also known as monetary commutation, is a legal system allowing offenders to pay money to substitute for the originally imposed prison term).
