South Korea's intelligence agency: North Korean hackers stole over $180 million in crypto assets in the first half of the year
In the first half of this year, North Korean hacking groups illegally obtained over $180 million in cryptocurrency assets. The notorious North Korean hacker group Lazarus Group is considered the prime suspect. Lazarus Group is believed to be behind several high-profile cyberattacks on cryptocurrency exchanges and projects, such as the March attack on Alphapo that resulted in a loss of $37 million. Last year, the group was identified by the U.S. government as responsible for stealing $600 million in assets from the Ronin project. A January 2022 report by blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis indicated that Lazarus Group was also involved in the 2020 hack targeting Kucoin cryptocurrency exchange, as well as a 2018 attack on another unnamed exchange. These two exchange breaches alone caused losses exceeding $500 million.
