The Celo community has initiated voting on a temperature check proposal for "transitioning to an Ethereum L2," with voting set to conclude on August 1. Support currently stands at 100%. This proposal aims to enable the Celo community to decide whether to move from being an independent EVM-compatible Layer 1 to becoming an Ethereum Layer 2, without voting on specific architectural or design details for achieving that transition. Previously, cLabs, the Celo development team, introduced a new proposal suggesting that Celo transition from an independent EVM-compatible L1 blockchain to an Ethereum L2. The proposal outlines key features of the transition plan, including utilizing a decentralized sequencer supported by the existing validator set running Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus, backed by off-chain data availability layers EigenLayer and EigenDA, and secured through ETH restaking. This design preserves Celo’s 1-block finality. Primary benefits of this migration to L2 include stronger Ethereum alignment and EVM compatibility, seamless developer experience, and enhanced security. Additionally, the transition will simplify liquidity sharing between Celo and Ethereum, providing a trustless bridging channel. From a community perspective, existing DApps will remain unchanged, including mobile-first features such as SocialConnect and the evolving regenerative finance (ReFi) stack.
