TechFlow news, Vitalik Buterin said in a Twitter Space on July 7 that Ordinals have revived Bitcoin's "builder culture." He had an in-depth discussion with Bitcoin supporters Eric Wall and Udi Wertheimer, exploring what Bitcoin developers could learn from Ethereum developers.
Buterin praised Ordinals and the BRC20 standard, viewing them as a rejection of the "stagnation" politics within the Bitcoin ecosystem. Additionally, Wall claimed that Bitcoin's Lightning Network cannot scale for future users and frequently fails when handling "even moderately sized payments." In response, Buterin suggested that the best approach is to focus on implementing various types of Layer-2 solutions while also seeking ways to make Bitcoin's base layer more efficient.
However, their positions drew criticism from more fundamentalist Bitcoin supporters. These critics argue that Bitcoin NFTs and smart contracts undermine Bitcoin's primary function as a peer-to-peer cash network. Among them is Jan3 CEO Samson Mow, who believes that Ordinals waste block space that could otherwise be dedicated solely to Bitcoin transactions.
