TechFlow news, according to Cointelegraph, the TON Foundation has announced the launch of an on-chain encrypted messaging feature, enabling users to send end-to-end encrypted messages that only the intended recipient can read.
Anatoly Makosov, core developer at TON, said, "When sending Toncoin, Jettons, or NFTs on TON, you've always been able to include a message for the recipient—like 'for coffee' or 'happy birthday'—to personalize interactions. Now, these messages can be fully encrypted." Makosov added that this would also be highly useful in a "doomsday" scenario where traditional messenger servers fail. In such cases, TON could serve as a "reliable" and "protected" method for private communication.
Currently, encrypted messages can be sent using multiple retail wallet applications, including MyTonWallet, OpenMask, and TON Wallet. The announcement also stated that the feature will be added in an "upcoming update" to the mobile wallet Tonkeeper.
Notably, TON originated as a code fork created by the team behind the Telegram messaging app. Telegram abandoned the project before the mainnet launch in July 2020. However, it open-sourced the TON code upon departure, allowing others to continue building upon its existing foundation.
