TechFlow news: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman plans to testify before the U.S. Congress on May 16.
He hopes the United States will provide licenses and corresponding regulations for companies developing artificial intelligence, especially those operating chatbots. This would allow the U.S. to require these companies to comply with safety standards, such as testing their systems before release and publicly disclosing the results.
Last week, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law announced it would hear testimony from Altman and Christina Montgomery, IBM's Chief Privacy and Trust Officer, on that day.
In addition, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has made regulating artificial intelligence a top priority.
In an interview with CNBC, Altman said, "In the long run, we need governments to take action, establish regulations and standards to ensure we get as much benefit as possible from AI technology while minimizing downsides."
