TechFlow news — Ocelot, the treasury organization of the blockchain Celo, announced plans to revise the project's development roadmap by transforming its L1 architecture into a Layer 2 Rollup built on Celestia. This shift would leverage the Celestia network for shared security and data availability, relieving Celo of the responsibilities associated with validators and consensus mechanisms.
At the same time, Celestia, as a modular blockchain, offers Celo extensive customization options while still enabling Celo to focus on its core mission. This includes retaining existing core contracts and integrating them as part of Celo’s new L2 Rollup network. Notably, Celestia is the first modular blockchain network, establishing what is known as a data availability layer that provides consensus and transaction ordering, while delegating execution to Layer 2.
Ocelot emphasized that such a significant proposal requires substantial time, resources, and coordination. Particularly challenging will be gaining support from the three major entities managing Celo—Celo Foundation, cLabs, and Valora—as closely aligned as they are. The transition to an L2 architecture will face hurdles in promoting and convincing the community.
To address this, Ocelot will launch Mezcal, an incentivized testnet for Celo, which will deploy a replica of Celo as an L2 Rollup on Celestia. It will also implement the latest cutting-edge protocols and core technologies, strengthening the proof-of-concept for the migration to L2.
