TechFlow news — On the afternoon of November 27, residents in Shenzhen received a text message from the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) Shenzhen branch. The message invited users to experience ICBC's digital wallet, suggesting they search for "Internal Trial Wallet" within the ICBC mobile banking app. After opening the wallet, users could make purchases at merchants displaying the "Digital RMB logo."
Some users reported that when searching for "Internal Trial Wallet" in the ICBC mobile banking app, upon clicking it, a message appeared stating, "You are not an ICBC internal trial wallet test user and cannot use this feature for now."
On October 29, reports emerged indicating that ICBC was conducting internal testing of its cryptocurrency wallet, named the "ICBC Digital Currency Wallet." Online, screenshots of the so-called "ICBC Digital Currency Wallet Service Agreement" also circulated.
Earlier, on October 8, the Shenzhen Municipal Government Services and Data Administration announced a giveaway of 10 million yuan in digital RMB red packets to individuals in Shenzhen. Each red packet contained 200 yuan, totaling 50,000 packets. All individuals in Shenzhen who used a mainland China phone number and second-generation resident ID card could register for participation. Winners were selected via lottery, with the 200-yuan funds distributed as digital RMB red packets into the digital RMB wallets of 50,000 Shenzhen residents.
