TechFlow News, May 25: Wu Jihan posted on X stating that Europe’s current solar energy challenge is no longer merely about increasing power generation—it is now about lacking sufficient flexible electricity demand to absorb surplus energy. Citing the latest analysis from energy research firm Pexapark, Wu noted that Europe’s photovoltaic “self-cannibalization” phenomenon is rapidly worsening.
Wu pointed out that Europe’s solar deployment pace has already outstripped the development of grid system flexibility. In addition to energy storage, grid expansion, and demand response, Europe should also prioritize interruptible loads—including Bitcoin mining and other computational workloads. Such loads can be activated when electricity supply is abundant and shut down during grid stress, thereby acting as the “last buyer” for surplus renewable energy—reducing curtailment, improving PV project returns, and enhancing the profitability and financing viability of power generation and grid infrastructure investments.
