TechFlow News: On May 23, the Cangshan District People’s Procuratorate of Fuzhou City recently filed a public prosecution in a case involving the theft of Bitcoin and illicit gains. The defendant, Lin Mou, exploited his role assisting the victim Wang Mou in cashing out Bitcoin to steal Wang’s Bitcoin wallet private key and related data, then transferred and sold four Bitcoins, illegally profiting approximately RMB 900,000. In the first-instance trial, the court convicted Lin Mou of theft and sentenced him to 12 years and 7 months’ imprisonment, along with a fine of RMB 300,000. The second-instance court upheld the original verdict, rejecting Lin’s appeal. The procuratorate emphasized that although Bitcoin does not hold the same legal status as fiat currency, it possesses value, manageability, and transferability, thus qualifying as an object of property-related crimes.
