TechFlow News, May 2 — At Berkshire Hathaway’s annual shareholder meeting, CEO Greg Abel outlined the growth prospects for the company’s energy business, noting that the rapid development of the AI industry is creating new growth opportunities for this segment. Currently, half of Berkshire’s energy companies are already serving AI-related power demand and are continuously monitoring industry trends and the practical scope for business implementation.
Taking Iowa as an example, the company’s utility service area has expanded significantly, with four hyperscale data centers already built in the state—bringing a large number of new electricity customers to the region. Data center power consumption now accounts for 8% of the region’s peak load—a very high proportion within the utility sector—indicating substantial headroom for further growth in electricity demand driven by computing infrastructure development. The company expects data center power consumption to rise by another 5 to 10 percentage points over the next five years, and potentially reach as high as 50% in the long term—making it the most promising growth vector within its energy business.
