TechFlow News, April 27: Due to U.S. sanctions blocking Iranian ports, Iran is unable to ship oil to customers, and empty tankers cannot dock for loading—causing its oil inventories to accumulate continuously. To avoid shutting down some oilfields, Iran has begun storing oil on floating tankers. However, according to current and former Iranian officials, this country—highly dependent on oil exports for the majority of its revenue—is now adopting storage methods it has never used before to conserve space. These officials stated that Iranian authorities are utilizing shipping containers and “makeshift storage facilities,” namely dilapidated, decommissioned storage tanks in the southern oil hubs of Ahvaz and Asaluyeh.
