TechFlow News, April 24: According to CoinDesk, India is piloting the digital rupee across approximately 10 welfare programs, disbursing roughly $80 billion in subsidies and food benefits via e-rupee to reduce fund leakage and corruption, and to establish clearer use cases for its central bank digital currency (CBDC). Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India is advancing a cross-border CBDC interoperability framework slated for presentation at the 2026 BRICS Summit, aiming to enhance cross-border trade settlement efficiency and reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar. Currently, e-rupee has around 10 million users and cumulative transaction volume of approximately $3.6 billion—still significantly smaller than India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system, which processes roughly $300 billion in transactions monthly.
