Gaining control over the Strait of Hormuz is an extremely valuable bargaining chip Iran has secured in this conflict. Iran has agreed to a pause in military hostilities, but the war remains ongoing. Meanwhile, Iran’s state television emphasized that Iran must remain vigilant against any rhetoric suggesting that Iran must enter negotiations—or else face attacks from its adversaries. Even if the maritime blockade is lifted, Iran’s participation in negotiations must be conditional upon the exclusion of any agenda items infringing upon Iran’s sovereignty and dignity—chief among these being Iran’s defense and missile capabilities, as well as its nuclear capabilities and technology.
