TechFlow News, March 19: According to JINSHI Data, The Wall Street Journal reported on March 19, citing sources, that the United States is deploying additional troops to the Middle East and may seize Iran’s key oil export hub to compel Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The report states that approximately 2,200 U.S. Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit are en route to the Middle East aboard amphibious assault ships from Japan and are expected to arrive in about one week. The U.S. may use this force to seize Kharg Island as leverage to pressure Iran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Former Commander of U.S. Central Command Frank McKenzie said, “(U.S. forces) could destroy its (Kharg Island’s) oil infrastructure, causing irreparable damage to both Iran and the global economy—or they could seize it as a bargaining chip.”
