TechFlow News: On March 18, according to JIN10 Data, at Tencent Holdings’ 2025 earnings briefing, Ma Huateng publicly shared his thoughts on “shrimp farming” for the first time. He stated that “lobster” applications could enable AI to be deployed across diverse, rich scenarios—unlike in the past when AI was concentrated solely in chatbots—thereby better leveraging Tencent’s resources, enabling coordinated efforts across all business lines, and inspiring the development of WeChat agents currently underway. Ma noted that mini-programs within the WeChat ecosystem have always been decentralized, and such a philosophy could be integrated into future “lobster” applications. Service providers are particularly wary of being “short-circuited” or reduced to mere distribution channels; thus, Tencent must consider this need when designing its ecosystem. He emphasized that Tencent’s future “shrimp farming” strategy would combine centralization and decentralization. Agent partners desire traffic and entry points but also do not wish to be treated merely as callable components. “This is a longer-term consideration—everyone may need some patience, as it won’t emerge hastily.”
