TechFlow news — On January 20, according to The Paper, Li Dong (a pseudonym), a Shenzhen-based network information security engineer, has been accused of stealing funds from an online gambling website. Police in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province, and Changge, Henan Province, have separately launched investigations into the case and seized a total of 183 bitcoins from him.
Prosecutors allege that in 2020, Li Dong exploited a server vulnerability in the overseas online gambling platform "Kaiyun Sports" to illegally obtain personal information of over 1.84 million Chinese citizens, and stole approximately 35.5 million yuan in agent commission rebates from the website. A portion of these funds was used to purchase virtual currencies such as bitcoin.
The case has already gone to trial at the Changge City People's Court. Li Dong's defense lawyer has pleaded not guilty, arguing insufficient evidence and pointing out multiple signs of tampering in the electronic data. The court has announced a recess and will schedule another hearing at a later date.
