TechFlow reported on January 17 that, according to CoinDesk, in recently disclosed internal communications from OpenAI, Elon Musk briefly supported a plan in early 2018 for OpenAI to raise approximately $10 billion through an initial coin offering (ICO), but later abandoned the idea and ultimately left the project. The records show that during the 2017–2018 cryptocurrency boom, OpenAI founders seriously considered creating a tokenized, for-profit division to support its nonprofit mission. Musk later believed the organization would not be able to raise sufficient funds and shifted his focus to AI work at Tesla.
