TechFlow news, January 11 — According to CNBC, citing data from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), losses from cryptocurrency ATM scams reached as high as $240 million in the first half of 2025, approximately double the amount reported for similar scams in 2024.
An increasing number of cities are imposing bans on cryptocurrency ATMs. Spokane, Washington became the largest U.S. city to prohibit all crypto ATMs.
Multiple U.S. states are tightening regulations or discussing restrictive measures, with Arizona, Arkansas, Vermont, and Saint Paul, Minnesota considering following Spokane’s lead with comprehensive bans.
About 80% of the world's cryptocurrency ATMs are located in the United States. From a demand perspective, the U.S. represents a massive market, characterized by a significant unbanked population, extensive remittance channels, and relatively high cryptocurrency adoption rates.
