TechFlow news, December 12 — According to Theblock, the open-source payment protocol x402, incubated by Coinbase and built for AI agents, has launched its upgraded V2 version.
x402 V2 upgrades the original simple one-call payment system into a complete universal internet payment layer. The new version natively supports multiple blockchains by default, enabling native tokens on chains such as Base or Solana without requiring custom logic, while remaining compatible with traditional payment rails like ACH and card networks.
According to the report, within six months since its launch in May this year, x402 has processed over 100 million payments across various APIs, applications, and AI agents. The V2 version standardizes how networks and assets are identified on the protocol, creating a single universal payment format applicable across both blockchain and traditional payment rails.
The new version also introduces dynamic routing functionality, supporting payment workflows such as usage-based billing, subscriptions, prepaid models, and multi-step transactions. In September, Cloudflare and Coinbase jointly established the x402 Foundation to promote adoption of the protocol.
