TechFlow news, on December 9, the European Commission said Tuesday it has launched an antitrust investigation into Google to assess whether its use of web publishers' and YouTube content for AI-related purposes violates EU competition rules. The statement noted: "The investigation will focus on whether Google is distorting competition by imposing unfair terms on publishers and content creators or creating privileged access for itself to such content, thereby putting competing AI model developers at a disadvantage." The Commission expressed concern that Google may be using content from web publishers to generate its AI-powered services in search results without providing adequate compensation to publishers or giving them the option to refuse authorization. The Commission also voiced concerns that Google may be using content uploaded to YouTube to train its own generative AI models without compensation or granting creators the right to object.
