TechFlow news, December 5 — According to the U.S. Department of Justice website, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia has successfully recovered 420,740.422314 USDT and 1,249,996.15 BUSD through a civil asset forfeiture process. The funds, valued at nearly $1.7 million, originated from cryptocurrency investment fraud proceeds and money laundering activities and are currently being returned to victims.
According to court documents, scammers contacted victims via text messages and social media, pretending to be accidental acquaintances before luring them into encrypted messaging apps. Once contact was established, the scammers gained the victims’ trust and encouraged them to "invest" in cryptocurrency through fake investment websites. These websites mimicked legitimate cryptocurrency investment platforms but were designed to transfer victims’ funds directly to the scammers.
