TechFlow, December 4 — Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin emphasized the importance of hard constraints in protocol improvements on social media, including EIP-2929 and 3529 from 2021 (increasing SLOAD gas costs and reducing refund mechanisms), the 2024 SELFDESTRUCT adjustment (Dencun), and the upcoming 2025 implementation of a per-transaction gas limit of 16,777,216. Buterin noted that these restrictions eliminate various DoS attack risks, simplify client code, and create more room for efficiency improvements. He also predicted that future constraints will likely be needed, such as limiting the number of code bytes accessed and ZK-EVM prover cycles.
