Samsung Galaxy AI launches late-night surprise—another AI phone is here
Many features of the Galaxy S24 series smartphones integrate the capabilities of Samsung's artificial intelligence platform, Galaxy AI.

In the early hours of January 18, Samsung held its global Galaxy AI launch event, teaming up with Google’s Gemini Nano large model to “welcome the Galaxy AI era.”
According to official announcements, Galaxy AI features capabilities such as language understanding and image recognition. It can better comprehend user intent, enabling more natural conversations and voice interactions, while redefining mobile search.
The highlight of the entire event was the AI-powered smartphone. Many functions of the Galaxy S24 series integrate Samsung's artificial intelligence platform, Galaxy AI, injecting multimodal capabilities into core phone features like search, calls, messaging, and camera—featuring AI-powered visual search, real-time translation, text editing, image enhancement, and more.
The Galaxy S24 series is currently the second Android smartphone on the market, after the Google Pixel 8 Pro, to incorporate the Gemini Nano model. Beyond this model, certain features on the Galaxy S24 also benefit from Google’s Imagen 2 model, bringing text-to-image generation directly to the phone.
Circle to Search: “Redefining Search”
At the launch, Samsung unveiled a groundbreaking feature called "Circle to Search," which completely transforms existing mobile search methods. This function allows users to simply long-press the home button and circle anything they want to search for. In other words, without opening a search engine, drawing a circle around content on screen instantly retrieves relevant information about images, videos, or text.
Search what you circle
On Samsung’s S24 phones, whether you're watching a video or browsing social media posts, whenever there's something you’d like to look up, you can instantly initiate a search from any part of the screen by circling, highlighting, doodling, or tapping.
For example, when chatting with a friend on a social app about a restaurant, simply tap the restaurant name in the conversation to pull up detailed information. You may have seen similar functionality in WeChat before—but only for text and basic images, lacking fine-grained detail searches.
Adding questions enables “multi-layered search”
Now, Circle to Search extends detailed searching into images and videos through simple gestures. For instance, if you’re drawn to a dish while scrolling through short videos, just circle it on the screen to get related details.
Moreover, after circling an item, you can ask follow-up questions to make results more targeted and accurate. For example, if a meme element goes viral, you can circle the relevant part of the meme and ask how it became popular.
This undoubtedly offers a far more convenient search experience for smartphone users living in a visually driven age.
Your On-Demand “Personal Translator”
Next comes the real-time call translation feature, known in English as AI Translate. Even if you're speaking different languages during a call, AI provides instant simultaneous interpretation displayed right on screen—even if the other party isn't using a Samsung device. As Drew Blackard, Vice President of Product Management at Samsung, succinctly put it: “It’s like having your own personal translator during every call.”
“Personal translator” supports 13 languages
Galaxy AI currently supports real-time translation across 13 languages including Chinese, English, French, and German, handling both audio and text. More language options will be added in the future. All translations are processed locally on the device, ensuring immediacy. With this feature, travelers no longer need to worry about which translation app to use abroad.
The AI Translate function is also available within chat windows. For example, on social apps, you can directly send translated speech or text input to others.
Additionally, when both parties speak the same language, AI Translate acts as a language editor, helping refine your tone. Whether you're casually texting friends or formally communicating with clients at work, it helps avoid awkward moments where you “don’t even know how to speak.”
A Personalized AI “Notes Assistant”
In work and study, we often need to record valuable information. Living in an era of information overload, we receive massive amounts of textual and data-driven content daily. Large AI models have already demonstrated their ability to extract key insights—and now, Galaxy AI brings this capability straight into smartphones.
With the new “Notes Assistant,” Galaxy S24 introduces summarization features that automatically extract key points, translate content, generate summaries, organize files, create mind maps, refine titles, or apply project numbering. It can even transform page styles at one click to meet personalized needs.
The Notes Assistant shows early signs of an AI Agent
Recently, Apple introduced a new “Journal” app in iOS 17.2.1, which uses photos from your phone to create daily journal entries. Samsung’s Galaxy S24 takes notes a step further by turning them into an AI-powered editor. Think of this feature as an AI secretary—efficiently handling writing tasks or logging everyday life events. It already resembles the early form of an AI Agent.
AI-Enhanced Camera
On the camera front, Galaxy S24 features an advanced Nightography mode. Using AI, the phone enhances details in low-light conditions, delivering sharper, more refined videos with richer colors—providing high-quality photo and video experiences even at night.
In terms of zoom performance, the top-tier Ultra model supports high-resolution imaging at 2x, 3x, 5x, and 10x optical zoom, capturing clear portraits even from extreme distances.
Galaxy AI’s capabilities become even more evident post-capture—enter AI-powered photo editing.
Freely select and move objects within photos
Photo editing now includes “generative fill”—with just two steps (select and drag), users can quickly reposition objects within a photo without compromising the background, partially solving common post-production challenges. Galaxy AI also automatically analyzes photos and offers intelligent editing suggestions.
The Galaxy S24 series will begin rolling out globally starting January 31, first launching in South Korea followed by international markets. Local pre-orders open from January 19 to January 25.
Pricing starts at 1,155,000 KRW (~$6,196) for the S24, 1,353,000 KRW (~$7,170) for the S24+, and 1,698,400 KRW (~$9,000) for the Ultra model.
