Web3 games are flocking to Japan: exploring Oasys, a gaming-focused public blockchain built specifically for game developers in Japan
Joining the Oasys ecosystem means gaining access to various support for promotion in the Japanese market, enabling more effective business operations in Japan.
Japan, the world's third-largest gaming market, is typically the top destination for Chinese mobile game companies expanding overseas. Recently, miHoYo's new title Genshin Impact: Star Rail reached first place on Japan’s App Store game sales ranking, sparking widespread market discussion. In fact, according to a 2023 mobile gaming market report recently released by Sensor Tower, Chinese games have claimed five of the top ten spots on this chart. As reported in an article published on February 16, 2023, by “4Gamer,” Japan’s largest comprehensive gaming information website, among key overseas markets targeted by Chinese game developers, Japan ranks second globally after the United States. From the perspective of overseas revenue generated by Chinese game companies, income from the U.S. accounts for 32.21%, while the Japanese market contributes 17.21%.

In this already mature Japanese gaming market, Web3 gaming is emerging as the next major trend. In fact, several major Japanese game studios, including Square Enix, have begun to invest in Web3, participating in the development and incubation of multiple Web3 games. Numerous leading game companies from South Korea, Europe, and North America also view Japan as one of the most promising markets and are rapidly entering the space.
The reasons behind global companies’ increasing interest in Japan’s Web3 gaming market include the following aspects:
First, the Japanese government is actively promoting Web3 development. From the ruling Liberal Democratic Party establishing the Digital Society Promotion Headquarters—a dedicated committee focused on Web3—to the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren) proposing to include Web3 in national strategy, these actions reflect strong governmental support for advancing Web3 adoption. At WebX, Asia’s largest Web3 conference scheduled for July 25–26 at Tokyo International Forum, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will deliver a video address outlining the government’s recent Web3 promotion initiatives.

After experiencing significant hacking incidents in the cryptocurrency sector, Japan took the lead in calling for global discussions and regulations around investor protection and other legal frameworks related to the Web3 industry, thereby creating a safer environment for traditional enterprises to enter the Web3 space.
Another key factor is Japanese users’ relatively high acceptance of Web3 gaming. According to a market survey conducted by Pacific Meta, a leading Web3 consulting firm in Japan, approximately 90% of the 1,030 respondents aged 20 to 70 residing in Japan hold neutral or positive views toward Web3 games—contrasting sharply with the generally negative attitudes held by most gamers in the North American market toward NFTs and other Web3 projects.

Oasys, a Layer-1 blockchain specifically designed for gaming, is currently a leader in Japan’s Web3 gaming landscape. Multiple game companies have become validators on Oasys, including globally renowned traditional gaming giants such as SQUARE ENIX, SEGA, NEXON, and Ubisoft, as well as leading Web3 gaming firms like MYTHICAL and double jump tokyo. Additionally, non-gaming industry heavyweights such as SoftBank and KDDI have also joined. For Web3 gaming companies aiming to enter the Japanese market, using Oasys offers several advantages:
First, Oasys is a blockchain project founded in Japan, with team members originating from many major domestic game companies. Beyond its well-known partners, the Oasys ecosystem includes numerous local game studios and player communities. Joining the Oasys ecosystem means gaining access to various forms of marketing and operational support in Japan, enabling more effective business expansion within the market.

Another attraction for developers is Oasys’s dual-layer architecture, consisting of a Hub Layer (Layer 1) and a Verse Layer (Layer 2). This structure satisfies developers’ needs while remaining fully compliant with Japanese regulations. Specifically, it achieves the best of both worlds: combining the customizable control over in-game economies typical of private chains, with the high decentralization and security features of public chains, all while ensuring compliance with Japan’s rules on digital asset transactions.
More importantly, the Oasys Council—centered around Oasys node operators—is expected to emerge as a leading organization in the future Web3 gaming industry. The Council was established to serve as the decision-making body for the entire Oasys blockchain, but it will also discuss broader issues such as industry standards. As the Council incorporates more leaders from Japan and across the global gaming industry, decisions made by the Oasys Council could eventually become de facto industry standards for Web3 gaming. Participating in the Oasys ecosystem is the first step toward joining this influential Council.
With these inherent advantages, Oasys has attracted not only Japanese game developers but also numerous international studios announcing plans to launch games on its platform. For example, gaming giant Ubisoft recently announced it will soon release its new blockchain game “Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles” on Oasys—an indication that many more global titles are likely to follow.
