Nostr founder: Drivechain will bring a new paradigm to the Bitcoin ecosystem
With the introduction of the Drivechain solution, the Bitcoin ecosystem will also usher in a period of prosperity.
I. Introduction
At the end of 2022, a decentralized social protocol called Nostr made waves across the entire Web3 industry. Nostr, short for Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays, is an open-source decentralized social network protocol launched in 2020. Its founder, Fiatjaf, is also a developer of Bitcoin and the Lightning Network.
Nostr's innovation lies in being a fully decentralized social protocol, allowing users to publish content and interact with others, thereby truly addressing the slippery slope of censorship. The emergence of Nostr attracted significant attention and participation from users, quickly gaining fame.
However, Nostr was also banned by Twitter’s current CEO, Elon Musk, due to controversial content. This incident sparked debates around social media censorship and freedom of speech. In contrast, former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey expressed support for Nostr and personally funded it with 14 BTC. This move stirred discussions within the industry and gave Nostr greater visibility and development opportunities.
While Nostr’s surge in popularity and controversy drew public attention to decentralized social protocols, it also brings us back to examine Fiatjaf, the developer behind Nostr—his admiration for hacker culture, and his perspectives on the Bitcoin ecosystem where he has long been involved.

II. What is Nostr?
Nostr is a minimalist protocol capable of creating a censorship-resistant global "social" network once and for all. It does not rely on any trusted central servers, instead using cryptographic keys and signatures. It doesn't depend on P2P technology nor issue any tokens.

How does it work? Simply put: everyone runs a client—this could be a native app or a web client. To post content (like a note), you sign it with your private key and send it to multiple relays (servers hosted by others or yourself). To receive updates from others, you query multiple relays to see if they have information about those users. Anyone can run a relay; it's very simple, doing nothing except accepting posts from certain people and forwarding them to others. We don’t need to trust relays—signatures are verified on the client side.
Since Nostr’s creator Fiatjaf is also a developer of Bitcoin and the Lightning Network, Nostr natively supports the Lightning Network. The Lightning Network is extremely fast and powerful, capable of supporting high-concurrency applications, providing strong technical support for apps built on Nostr.
The Nostr protocol serves as Lego blocks for decentralized social networking. As a finely designed infrastructure, it empowers hidden super-developers to build imaginative products deeply rooted in Bitcoin’s core philosophy. That’s the magic of the Nostr protocol!
III. The Rise of the Nostr Decentralized Social Protocol
The main reason Nostr went viral is that it offers a completely new social media experience, integrating Bitcoin ideals and blockchain technology into social networking.

So what exactly led to Nostr’s explosive growth?
● Decentralization: Nostr is not controlled by any central authority or company. Instead, the network consists of independently operated data relays (servers). This means the overall Nostr network is resistant to censorship or manipulation by any single entity. Its strong emphasis on protecting against social media censorship and safeguarding free speech has drawn widespread attention and interest.
● Anonymity: Unlike many social platforms, Nostr does not collect user data to sell to third-party advertisers. No email addresses, phone numbers, or government IDs are linked to Nostr accounts. Like Bitcoin, the system verifies data validity solely through public keys and cryptographic signatures. Users retain full control over their data and privacy, attracting many privacy-conscious individuals.
● Monetization: Nostr provides content creators with a unique monetization model. While other platforms rely on ad revenue, Nostr allows creators to directly monetize their content via fan tips (known as “zaps”). Infrastructure providers on Nostr can also monetize their services through Lightning Network payments. Thanks to Fiatjaf’s prior experience building the Lightning Network, transactions on Nostr are fast and convenient, greatly enhancing user experience.
● Open Source: Nostr’s code is publicly accessible, usable, and modifiable by anyone. This fosters transparency and collaboration in protocol development. Anyone can contribute to improving Nostr, enabling the community to collectively evolve the protocol. Its flexible and adaptive design ensures continuous improvement based on user needs, giving users a sense of ownership and investment critical to the protocol’s long-term success.
Nostr’s rapid rise results from a combination of factors—its decentralization, monetization capabilities, integration with Lightning Network payments, interactivity, and controversies—all contributing to massive user engagement. These elements together provide a new paradigm for applying Bitcoin and blockchain technologies in social media, showcasing the allure of technology and Fiatjaf’s hacker ethos!
IV. The Founder of Nostr Expresses Strong Support for Drivechain
Whether discussing Nostr or Bitcoin, one unavoidable issue arises. For example, when Nostr approaches 100,000 daily active users, the infrastructure powered by relays begins to face significant strain. Developers then need to implement CDNs and image optimizers to reduce bandwidth usage and maintain smooth performance. You probably know what I’m getting at—yes, scalability. We won’t dive deep into Nostr’s scaling challenges now; new solutions may emerge as its ecosystem grows. However, Bitcoin’s scalability remains an urgent priority today.
As previously mentioned, the anonymous developer Fiatjaf is not only the builder of Nostr but also an early contributor to Bitcoin and has contributed to the LNURL standard in the Lightning Network community. He even created Etleneum, a centralized Ethereum application that leverages the Lightning Network to speed up Bitcoin payments and improve scalability. Like many Bitcoin users, Fiatjaf chooses not to reveal his real name—perhaps a firm commitment to the rare and authentic spirit of Bitcoin.
Due to his architectural expertise, Fiatjaf holds authoritative and constructive views on Bitcoin scaling. Among various Bitcoin scaling proposals, Fiatjaf seems particularly enthusiastic about Drivechain, believing its concept can be realized through mechanisms like BIP-301 or Spacechains.

(Fiatjaf tweeted in 2021: "Drivechain is BTC's only hope.") Moreover, Fiatjaf has repeatedly endorsed Drivechain on his social media, along with LayerTwo Labs—the team led by its founder Paul Sztorc! It's worth noting that Fiatjaf is renowned in the Bitcoin community for his sharp technical insights and independent thinking. He has conducted in-depth research and analysis on various technical proposals and projects within the Bitcoin ecosystem, offering valuable opinions and suggestions. His voice carries broad recognition and influence in the Bitcoin community.
Therefore, Fiatjaf’s endorsement reflects not only Drivechain’s value and innovativeness within the Bitcoin community but also highlights the significant contributions of Paul Sztorc and the LayerTwo Labs team toward the future technological advancement of Bitcoin. It should be clarified that there is no commercial relationship between Fiatjaf and Paul Sztorc or his team (LayerTwo Labs). What we see here is likely mutual respect between tech-savvy individuals—a testament to the perceived technical "superiority" of the Drivechain solution!

(Fiatjaf tweeted: "We need Drivechain, otherwise all the work thousands of people have done in the BTC industry over the past 13 years will have been in vain.")
Fiatjaf believes Drivechain can resolve all current challenges facing Bitcoin. Drivechain enables experimentation and new use cases on Bitcoin—such as token issuance, private transactions, smart contracts, Turing completeness, GameFi, DeFi, oracles, and more. These represent highly valuable ecosystem expansions that have never truly materialized on Bitcoin because they cannot be fully implemented on the base layer. Some attempts either misled users with hype or resorted to custodial solutions like Liquid or RSK, failing to achieve genuine network effects.

In contrast, developers can leverage the Drivechain framework to create various sidechains tailored to different application scenarios, satisfying diverse user groups simultaneously. These functionalities are implemented on sidechains without posing any risk to the Bitcoin mainchain. Drivechain appears to accomplish its goals while also solving Bitcoin’s “scaling” problem, the blockchain security budget issue, and further enhancing Bitcoin’s decentralization.
It’s no surprise then why Fiatjaf consistently champions Drivechain. For the Bitcoin ecosystem narrative to advance, Drivechain’s intervention is essential—and that day may not be far off.
V. Conclusion
Sometimes, overcoming a complex challenge may take hundreds of people decades of effort—because its existence or emergence solves much larger problems, making it revered as a symbol of liberation and revolution. Today, as the Web3 sector rapidly advances, the development of the Bitcoin ecosystem is more urgent than ever. The arrival of Drivechain is critically important for the Bitcoin ecosystem. It provides scalability and innovation to the Bitcoin network while ensuring the security of the mainchain, comprehensively fulfilling the developmental needs of the Bitcoin ecosystem and driving its overall growth and expansion.
I believe that with the integration of Drivechain, the Bitcoin ecosystem will usher in a new era of prosperity. Although Drivechain may not go viral across the internet as quickly as Nostr, its impact will be far more enduring—just like Bitcoin itself!
