TechFlow news, September 9 — On September 8, 2025, Washington, D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed a lawsuit against bitcoin ATM operator Athena Bitcoin, Inc., accusing the company of illegally profiting from financial scams targeting elderly and vulnerable individuals. Investigations revealed that 93% of deposits made through Athena's bitcoin ATMs in the District were directly linked to scams, with the median victim age being 71. The company is charged with imposing hidden transaction fees as high as 26%—far exceeding the industry standard of 0.24%-3%—and enforcing a strict "no refund" policy for scam victims. The Attorney General’s Office demands that Athena comply with the law, compensate victims, and face penalties.
