TechFlow news, April 19 — According to Jinshi Data, The Wall Street Journal reported that for months, former U.S. President Trump has been privately discussing the possibility of firing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, though he has not yet made a final decision on whether to remove him before his term ends next year. Sources said that during meetings at Mar-a-Lago, Trump discussed with former Fed governor Kevin Warsh the potential removal of Powell before the end of his term, and possibly appointing Warsh as his successor.
According to people familiar with the matter, Warsh once advised against removing Powell, arguing that the Fed chair should be allowed to complete his term without interference. During a meeting in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump stated he believes he has the authority to remove Powell. "If I want him gone, he’ll be gone very quickly—believe me," Trump said. Trump also expressed dissatisfaction with Powell. Any attempt by Trump to fire Powell would almost certainly be challenged in the Supreme Court. Such a move could cast a shadow of scrutiny over Powell’s eventual departure, and the prospect of a Fed chair being removed over policy disagreements could unsettle financial markets.
The White House declined to comment. Warsh did not respond to requests for comment.
