TechFlow news — On March 20, according to Jinshi Data, despite Indian officials' efforts to appease the U.S. by reducing trade barriers, U.S. President Trump stated that India will face reciprocal tariffs starting April 2.
In an interview on Wednesday local time, Trump called India "one of the highest-tariff countries in the world." He added, "I believe they may significantly lower those tariffs, but on April 2, we will impose reciprocal tariffs on them."
Although Trump has repeatedly emphasized that India will not be exempted from the April 2 tariffs, Indian officials have expressed more optimism. Indian Commerce Minister Goyal visited the U.S. earlier this month and said he held "forward-looking discussions" with Trump administration officials regarding a trade agreement, with both sides hoping to reach a deal before this fall.
