TechFlow news — On March 4, a new analysis from QCP Capital indicated that the brief market rally following Donald Trump's Sunday announcement on Truth Social about a cryptocurrency reserve plan quickly faded, as risk assets broadly retreated, erasing most of Sunday’s gains. The sell-off was exacerbated by Trump's renewed push to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, reinforcing investor concerns over escalating trade tensions.
The analysis noted that the unexpected inclusion of XRP, SOL, and ADA tokens in the proposed reserve plan has sparked divisions within the crypto community. Initial optimism about the initiative's benefits has given way to deeper scrutiny. Current skepticism primarily centers on potential contradictions between this plan and DOGE's cost-cutting measures, as well as opaque funding sources for the reserve.
QCP Capital stated that this market downturn could intensify pressure on Trump, especially after receiving strong support and donations from the crypto community during his campaign. Even the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) pause and withdrawal of enforcement actions against crypto firms failed to halt the sell-off, highlighting broader risk-averse sentiment across markets.
The report highlighted that after a month of subdued cross-asset volatility, market anxiety has resurfaced due to prospects of tariff confrontations dampening global growth. This shift is reflected in the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield falling by 50 basis points over the past two weeks, the VIX breaking above 22, and Bitcoin's short-term volatility surging up 8 points since the weekend, with skew markedly shifting toward put options.
