TechFlow reports, on February 19, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin responded to questions regarding whether rollups are overall beneficial or parasitic to Ethereum and whether ETH truly needs these L2s. He stated that Ethereum currently adopts a hybrid L1 + L2 scaling approach but still needs clear demarcation of transaction scopes between the L1 and L2 layers.
Vitalik noted that moving all transactions to L2 could weaken ETH's role as a medium of exchange and store of value, and cross-L2 operations still rely on L1. At the same time, keeping all transactions on L1 is also unfeasible, as it could lead to centralization and fail to meet the infinitely growing demand for on-chain transactions.
He added that in the future, the L2 ecosystem may see more solutions focused on privacy and specific application scenarios. In the short term, Ethereum will continue enhancing L1 performance, increasing blobs to expand L2 capacity, and advancing cross-L2 interoperability, allowing the market to autonomously choose suitable scaling solutions.
