TechFlow news — On January 20, according to the Korea Daily, Busan police in South Korea announced the dismantling of a criminal gang led by a former professional football player. The group is accused of laundering money for 112 gambling websites through a fake cryptocurrency trading platform, involving approximately 11 trillion Korean won (about $756.8 million).
Between January 2022 and September 2023, the gang hired active corporate security software developers to build the fraudulent trading platform. Using over 200 bank accounts, they collected gambling funds from 66,802 members, earning around 10 billion Korean won (approximately $6.88 million) in fees at a rate of 0.1%. Police also discovered that the gang used deepfake videos of celebrities to lure 80 minors into gambling. So far, eight individuals have been arrested, and 11 others have been prosecuted without detention.
