TechFlow reports on January 13 that, according to The Block, New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a new lawsuit on Thursday aiming to recover $2.2 million in frozen stablecoins from a fraud ring allegedly targeting New Yorkers seeking remote job opportunities. The lawsuit states that nearly $2.2 million worth of USDT and USDC stablecoins have been frozen in wallets controlled by the scammers. The action seeks to recover these funds along with damages, attorney fees, and to permanently bar the alleged perpetrators from conducting similar scams. Several victims who lost $100,000 or more are named in the suit, including Ellie, a hotel receptionist residing in Nassau County, and Mel, a 31-year-old teacher from Queens.
Notably, James plans to serve legal notice to the alleged fraudsters by airdropping an NFT containing a link to the legal documents into their wallets. This marks the first known instance of legal service being executed via NFT, a method approved by the court after traditional service attempts failed. The NFT, named "KATZ," includes a link to the legal filings. This approach could set a precedent for future use of blockchain technology in serving legal notices.
