TechFlow reports, on January 2, according to TechCrunch, Telegram released its first update of the year, introducing third-party supported account verification methods, new message search filters, and a feature to convert gifts into NFTs. Accounts verified by third parties will display a unique new badge instead of the traditional blue checkmark.
In a blog post, Telegram stated: "This decentralized additional verification platform effectively prevents scams, reduces misinformation, and sets a new security benchmark for social platforms through a distinctive proactive solution." Telegram has also introduced a way to convert gifts into NFTs with custom backgrounds and icons. Users can send gifts by spending Telegram Stars, which can be purchased via in-app purchases or on the Fragment website by connecting a TON cryptocurrency wallet. Telegram noted that users will be able to trade these NFTs across different platforms. Notably, Telegram will charge users a fee for upgrading gifts into collectibles to cover blockchain transaction costs.
Telegram is also leveraging cryptocurrency to provide monetization opportunities for creators and as a payment method for games and mini-apps on the platform. Additionally, it has launched emoji reactions for service messages (such as when someone joins a group), along with new search filters for private chats, group chats, and channels.
