TechFlow news, December 23 — According to Cointelegraph, Italy's data protection authority has fined OpenAI $15.7 million (€15 million) following an investigation into data collection practices of its flagship AI model, and ordered the ChatGPT maker to run a six-month public awareness campaign.
The Italian Data Protection Authority (IDPA), also known as Garante, said in a statement on December 20 that its investigation found OpenAI failed to notify the agency about a data breach incident that occurred in March 2023.
The regulator also stated that OpenAI "processed users' personal data" to train the chatbot without first establishing an "adequate legal basis" for such processing, violating the "principles of transparency and related informational obligations towards users."
