TechFlow news — On October 16, according to The Block, U.S. prosecutors recommended a five-year prison sentence for Ilya Lichtenstein, followed by three years of supervised release, for his role in laundering funds tied to the 2016 Bitfinex hack.
In a sentencing memorandum submitted to the District of Columbia court, the U.S. government proposed a below-guidelines sentence despite Lichtenstein's involvement in cybercrime, citing his substantial cooperation and assistance in other investigations. For example, he testified during the trial against the operator of the cryptocurrency mixer Bitcoin Fog.
Prosecutors noted that imposing a significant sentence on Lichtenstein could help break the cycle of young cybercriminals who, due to social isolation, find belonging online and gradually become drawn into criminal activity.
In August 2023, Lichtenstein and his co-defendant Morgan pleaded guilty to money laundering charges related to the Bitfinex security breach. At the time of their arrest, the U.S. Department of Justice executed the largest financial seizure in its history.
