TechFlow reports on October 15 that, according to Cointelegraph, Towns, a blockchain-powered social media alternative, has officially launched. Founded by Ben Rubin, co-creator of Houseparty and Meerkat, the platform aims to establish a new standard for digital communication using blockchain technology.
Towns is built on the River messaging protocol, which includes an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible Layer 2 chain, decentralized nodes, and smart contracts deployed on the Base protocol. While its interface resembles established communication platforms like Discord or Slack, Towns aims to give users full ownership and control over their data through River smart contracts on Base, ensuring transparency.
Previous report, Towns raised $25.5 million in a Series A funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz (A16z) in February 2023.
