TechFlow news: Nick Tomaino, founder of cryptocurrency venture capital firm 1confirmation, recently shared his startup investment insights. Tomaino stated that for early-stage startups, there is a negative correlation between the size of initial funding and long-term success. He noted that all 46 projects backed by 1confirmation that raised less than $10 million are still operating, with many performing exceptionally well; in contrast, the three failed projects had each raised over $10 million before achieving product-market fit.
Tomaino believes that securing large amounts of capital too early can lead to distraction and diminished motivation. Once a company raises excessive funds, it may over-hire, spread investments too thin across multiple areas, and lose focus.
This insight has led Tomaino to prefer investing in focused and capable "dark horses" rather than complacent "front-runners" who become overconfident after early fundraising success.
