TechFlow reported on August 15, according to CoinDesk, that the restaking protocol EigenLayer has sparked controversy after its employees received large amounts of tokens from ecosystem project airdrops. The total value of these tokens peaked at nearly $5 million. Eigen Labs had previously provided lists of employee wallet addresses to projects preparing to launch tokens, including Ether.Fi, Renzo, and AltLayer.
One project team said they distributed portions of their new cryptocurrency to each Eigen Labs employee as a "thank you," with each allocation eventually reaching $80,000 in value. Another team stated that Eigen Labs sent them a list of employee wallet addresses and felt compelled to distribute tokens to avoid jeopardizing their relationship with Eigen Labs, a company critical to their business.
In response to these issues, Eigen Labs and the Eigen Foundation quietly banned employees from accepting such token airdrops in May this year, acknowledging that the practice could lead to conflicts of interest or at least create the appearance of one, and implemented stricter internal policies.
