TechFlow reported that on August 6, several U.S. Democratic lawmakers, including Elizabeth Warren, sent a letter to CFTC Chair Rostin Behnam urging swift implementation of rules to ban political event betting contracts.
The lawmakers argued that political betting could undermine democratic processes, alter voter incentives, and potentially be exploited by wealthy individuals and political insiders.
They emphasized that the CFTC lacks congressional authorization to regulate elections, and warned that with the 2024 election approaching, such betting could exacerbate existing campaign finance issues and risks of foreign interference.
In May, the CFTC proposed banning various event contracts, including those tied to political contests. Behnam previously stated that permitting political event contracts would exceed the CFTC's statutory authority.
