TechFlow reported, citing Decrypt, that Canadian rapper Drake recently lost over $1 million in bitcoin bets during the NBA Finals and Stanley Cup Finals. Drake first wagered 500,000 dollars worth of bitcoin on the Dallas Mavericks to win the NBA championship but lost the bet. He then placed another 500,000-dollar bitcoin bet on the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL's Stanley Cup Finals, suffering an additional loss.
Drake shared his betting slips on Instagram, explaining that he chose the Dallas Mavericks due to his connections in Texas, while picking the Oilers was "obvious." In recent years, cryptocurrency gambling has surged in popularity, with numerous Bitcoin casinos and betting websites competing for users. Additionally, prediction markets like Polymarket have drawn attention amid high-stakes events such as the 2024 U.S. presidential election, recording millions of dollars in trading volume.
