TechFlow reports, according to ZachXBT monitoring, that several weeks ago a user lost $245,000 after mistakenly downloading malware. The incident began with an account impersonating Peter Lauten, a partner at a16z, reaching out about a podcast collaboration.
The attacker took advantage of Peter Lauten changing his X (Twitter) username by quickly registering his old username. The victim was thereby tricked into installing a fake meeting application named "Vortax," which was actually malicious software. Shortly after the download, the victim's cryptocurrency assets were transferred away.
