TechFlow reports that Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated on Twitter that, compared to five years ago, his confidence in the concept of "simplifying L1 at the cost of more complex L2" has decreased by about threefold.
He noted that when weighing trade-offs between L1 and L2, it's not clear whether L2 bugs are less risky than those at L1.
He emphasized that while a consensus failure at L1 might cause temporary chaos, bugs at L2 could lead people to permanently lose substantial amounts of money.
Therefore, he believes it's worthwhile to add some complexity to L1 features in order to reduce the code burden on L2 and keep L2 simpler.
