TechFlow reports, according to a police statement, German authorities have temporarily seized 50,000 bitcoins worth $2.17 billion, calling the operation the largest cryptocurrency seizure in history.
The claim relates to the operation of a piracy website that violated copyright laws in 2013, with proceeds from the business later converted into bitcoin.
The statement said one of the two suspects voluntarily transferred the bitcoins to the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). Although no formal charges have yet been filed against the individuals, investigations into subsequent commercial money laundering activities are ongoing.
The police statement added: "No final decision has yet been made regarding the use of the bitcoins."
