TechFlow news, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared an updated 2024 Ethereum roadmap, noting that with Ethereum's technical path continuously solidifying, there are "relatively few changes" compared to the 2023 version.
Details include:
1. The Merge: The role of Single Slot Finality (SSF) in post-Merge PoS improvements is being consolidated. It is becoming increasingly clear that SSF represents the simplest path to addressing many current weaknesses in Ethereum’s PoS design;
2. The Surge: Significant progress has been made on Surge (rollup scaling), both via EIP-4844 and rollups themselves. Cross-rollup standards and interoperability are seen as areas requiring long-term improvement;
3. The Scourge: Following some redesign, the focus is now on countering economic centralization in PoS across two key areas: (i) MEV, and (ii) general staking pool issues;
4. The Verge: Major progress achieved; Verkle trees are nearing readiness for integration;
5. The Purge: "State expiry" has been deprioritized to reflect a broad consensus that it is a relatively low-priority and low-urgency project, especially considering stateless clients and PBS/execution tickets;
6. The Splurge: Due to cryptographic weaknesses within existing architectures, VDF has been scaled back, reflecting a temporary reduction in emphasis.
