TechFlow reports that the IRS Criminal Investigation division has included four cryptocurrency-related cases in its list of the top 10 "most prominent and significant investigations" of 2023. These cases include investigations into the Silk Road marketplace, OneCoin, Oyster Protocol founder "Bruno Block," and a money laundering scheme using Bitcoin ATM kiosks. The IRS stated that over the past 20 years, four major cases involved cryptocurrency seizures, fraudulent activities, money laundering, and other schemes.
The division's chief, Jim Lee, said in a statement: "Our investigators dismantled international tax schemes that preyed on individuals' personal information, probed multi-level marketing schemes involving cryptocurrency, and exposed one of the largest fraud schemes in history centered around renewable fuel credits."
