TechFlow reports that the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) paid $16 million this year to whistleblowers who provided information leading to successful enforcement actions, most of which involved cryptocurrencies. Notably, since the program's inception in 2014, the CFTC has awarded nearly $350 million and has resulted in over $3 billion in enforcement sanctions against cases stemming from whistleblower tips. This includes litigation against Adam Todd, CEO of Digitex, who was fined $16 million.
CFTC Commissioner Christy Goldsmith Romero stated that the majority of tips received this year involved cryptocurrencies, which she described as "an area where fraud and other illegal activities continue to be prevalent."
