TechFlow reports that the DFINITY Foundation is developing a global standard technology to incentivize recycling activities and is collaborating with management consulting firm Roland Berger.
Inspired by carbon credit markets, Roland Berger launched the Voluntary Recycling Credit (VRC) standard in June this year.
In a statement, the company said the VRC initiative aims to address global challenges in the waste management sector contributing to climate change, adding that less than 10% of global plastic waste is recycled out of 2 billion tons of municipal solid waste generated annually.
DFINITY will build a product on the Internet Computer for buying, selling, and trading recycling credits, enabling recyclers, waste producers, and others to track these credits.
