Vitalik: Node centralization is one of the main challenges facing Ethereum, and Ethereum's top priority is achieving a higher level of scalability.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated that node centralization is one of the major challenges facing Ethereum, and a perfect solution may still be 20 years away. Speaking at the Korea Blockchain Week event, Buterin highlighted that node centralization represents one of the biggest issues confronting the Ethereum network, which should be addressed by reducing the cost and difficulty of running nodes. He noted that most Ethereum nodes today rely on centralized cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services, making Ethereum vulnerable to single points of failure due to centralization. Buterin emphasized that resolving centralization requires tackling six key problems, with node operation being a crucial component in ensuring Ethereum’s long-term decentralization. He brought up the concept of "statelessness," a key technical approach toward achieving greater decentralization. He explained that stateless clients would allow nodes to operate with minimal data requirements, enabling them to verify network activity without depending on centralized service providers. The Ethereum Foundation has stated that true decentralization can only be achieved when node operators are able to run Ethereum on modest, affordable hardware. However, Buterin acknowledged that these technical hurdles are unlikely to be resolved in the short term—potentially taking 10 or even 20 years. In addition to statelessness, Buterin mentioned other initiatives aimed at reducing Ethereum's centralization, including simplifying documentation, lowering barriers to distributed staking, enhancing the security of staking, and making it more broadly accessible to stake ether (ETH). Nevertheless, Buterin concluded that Ethereum's greatest

Besides statelessness, Buterin also mentioned other initiatives to reduce Ethereum's centralization, including simplifying documentation, lowering barriers to distributed staking, enhancing staking security, and making ETH staking more accessible. Nevertheless, Buterin concluded that Ethereum’s most pressing challenge remains achieving higher scalability.
